Tribute & Message From The Family

Beloved Wife and Daughter, Loving Mother and Sister

Message From The Family

Thank you for your support during this difficult time. Please enhance this tribute to Kathleen by adding your memories and photos.

Kathleen Costello Bockol of Newtown Square, passed away in her home on May 27 just 2 days short of her 53 birthday after a heroic battle with a rare form of brain cancer.

A graduate of Abington High and the University of Scranton where she majored in Medical Technology, Mrs. Bockol dedicated her professional career to helping bring life to others. She was part of the medical team at Albert Einstein Medical Center that completed the first frozen in-vitro embryo transfer in the Philadelphia region and the third in the country resulting in a successful birth. She later worked at Abington Memorial Hospital's fertilization practice and then at Pennsylvania Hospital's performing the laboratory procedures enabling many women to achieve their life dream of having children.

Mrs. Bockol fulfilled her dream celebrating the daily joys of her twin children, Sarah Megan Bockol and Eric Joseph Bockol. She was always there for them, culminating in being able to see their graduations this month from Bryn Mawr College and Lafayette College, respectively. In addition to being survived by her children Mrs. Bockol is survived by her husband of 26 years, Gary Bockol whom she met at Abington High where they were Physics lab partners, her mother Sonia Kucharski Costello, and her sister, Megan Costello Connell. Mrs. Bockol was preceded in death by her father, Thomas J. Costello.

During her fight with cancer Mrs. Bockol volunteered for several clinical trials, one of which was recently presented by Dr. Donald M O'Rourke, a neurosurgeon at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where Mrs. Bockol was undergoing treatment using a potentially promising immunotherapy. She was one of 12 patients to receive CAR-T cell therapy, which has been successfully used in patients with advanced acute lymphoblastic leukemia. This immunotherapy involves engineering the patient's own immune cells to recognize and attack their tumors. Mrs. Bockol's hope was that her participation would one day lead to a cure for Glioblastoma, the type of cancer she had.

A Funeral Mass is planned for 11 AM Wednesday, June 1, at St. Anastasia Roman Catholic Church 3301 West Chester Pike, Newtown Square PA 19073 where friends may visit the family 10 – 10:50 AM. Interment services will be held privately.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Memory of Kathy to the Kathleen Costello Bockol memorial fund C/O TD Bank.

Kathy was blessed with a big heart and a wonderful, dry sense of humor. This made her great to work with and lots of fun to have lunch with, as we did so many times while together at Albert Einstein Hospital. Years later I was lucky to again work with Kathy at Pennsylvania Hospital. She will always have a special place in my happy memories. I am so very sorry for your loss.

There was a time when I was struggling with my own health. Kathy offered to come to my house and help me bake a fruit tart for my book club. She was firm, confident and supportive in my kitchen. And as soon as we were finished with the baking, Kathy disappeared, not needing to get any credit for her effort, but allowing me to accomplish the book club meeting without her. Kathy was a doer, her actions spoke greater than any words needed.

I am deeply sorry for your loss. Seeing the picture of Kathy in Ocean City reminds me that some of my favorite childhood memories come from spending time there with the Costello family. We kids would hang out, play games, walk up the block for ice cream...while our parents sat and talked and laughed. It was simple and joyful. Kathy always made me laugh and had such a sweet, calming way about her. She was special. Mrs. Costello, Meg, Gary, Eric and Sarah, Kathy is resting easy now in the caring, compassionate arms of our Lord and those of Mr. Costello. May God give you strength, courage and peace at this very difficult time. With love and sympathy.

Gary, Eric, and Sarah - I am so sorry for your loss. Kathy was so brave for so long, and while it's of little comfort to you, she is at peace. I know your love and support eased her burden. You're in my thoughts. Take care, Susan Williams, neighbor, Echo Valley

We are so sorry to hear of Kathy's passing after this long terrible illness which she so bravely fought. Kathy was a wonderful neighbor and friend whom I would always look forward to see while out walking our dogs. She was an exceptionally devoted wife and mother to Sarah and Eric. A typical gesture of Kathy's was to take a crystal clear photo of my son receiving his high school diploma, and she frequently forwarded newspaper clippings of my children's appearances in the county press. We also relished receiving her baked goods. We wish the entire family peace and hope that they are forever comforted and sustained by the loving memories they have of her. Kathy was a positive role model to all women in our community. She was a wonderful wife, mother and friend. She always had a positive, intelligent view point and was an advocate for our children. She will always have a special place in our hearts. With our deepest sympathy to Gary, Eric, Sarah and the rest of Kathy's family from your neighbors Ed, Tricia, Eddie & JD Costantini

You do not say good-bye to loved ones
You find the space that they have left in earthly days
And gently fill your heart with precious memories.
A pile of home baked cookies in Kathy's kitchen,
A splash of colored flowers in her garden,
A quiet moment with Brandy snuggled in her lap,
A tender kiss on Sarah's cheek,
A giant hug for Eric,
A cheering mom and dad at all their sports,
Both their hearts bursting with pride for Sarah's ballet,
Gary and Kathy sharing all the joys and sorrows of family.
You do not say good-bye to loved ones.

Words can not describe what I am feeling now. My heartfelt condolences to the entire family. I just want you to know that you made an incredible impact on my life and my wife, always punctual in sending updates during Christmas times with pictures. I learned a lot of lab techniques working with her at Einstein. Kathy is always pleasant, patient, joyful and cheerful. We are going to miss her so much.
